Cake Stall Report

Bethan Lilford, Helen Pope and Rebecca & Linda Viljoen doing their bit helping out at the cake stall
By Helen Pope
Head of Fundraising
Hamerlsey Netball Club held the annual cake stall on the 9 June, and fortunately were allowed back under the verandah this year which gave us a lot more space. We also had a second stall setup at the far courts which proved successfull as well.
We started setting up bright and early at 8am, and the goodies started to roll in. Hamersley has some very talented and creative bakers amongst us, and the organisers were very impressed with the quality and quantity we received. Without the support of our club members there would be no cake stall.
We were constant with sales throughout the day with the busiest times between the games. We sold items from 50 cents up to $10 for some of the larger items such as cakes. We also had a guess the jelly bean jar, which was challenging but fun!
How many jelly beans do you think were in this jar? Keep guessing until you get the right answer, the game will help you!

After an initial push for volunteers from our Vice President, Mel Hunter, we had plenty of members manning both stalls. We would like to officially thank each and every one of them for putting their hand up to help out.
Special thanks to my fundraising partner, Nicole Fevre, who managed the second stall at the far courts, and her daughters for helping out for most of the day, especially at the end making those final sales.
These goodies didn't last long, everything sold out!
We made approximately $900 and had sold everything by the end of the day. Overall, the day was a great success and we are grateful for the support of our wonderful club members.

Janine Friday's Journey to 355 Games

Proud mum Janine pictured with her two beautiful daughters, Jaide and Maddison, taken in 2014 on Grand Final day
By Beth Harvey
Open Coordinator
I have known Janine Friday (formerly Berry) for 20 + years and have been lucky enough to play with her (albeit briefly), work alongside her in committee positions and most recently coach her in Open Team 1. I am also lucky to call her a friend along with many others at Hamersley and beyond in the wider netball community. Neen is someone who is kind and generous and a pleasure to be around, she is also calm, measured and caring (although she tells us she does raise her voice at her children sometimes).
Janine started her journey at Hamersley in 1994 and has continued to play, coach and be an active member of the committee throughout this time. She has won 9 Premierships for HNC as a player and 4 as a coach. She is a recipient of the prestigious Toyota Autoparts Legends Award in 2006 and was awarded Life Membership of the club in 2008.
2001 was one of the 9 Premierships that Janine has won so far as a player. Pictured in her team are: Back row, left to right: Janine Birkett (Player Coach), Beth Harvey, Keryn Devenish, Paula Hurle, Lauren Sirens, Kylie Hall, Lyn Pemberton and Tom Berry (Manager). Front row, left to right: Janine Friday, Kellie Steer, Sheree Pemberton, Michelle Cox, Faye Newham and Larissa Herring (Assistant Coach)
Janine is an inspiration to us all and we are so proud that she has reached this milestone and club record of 355 games in her 25th consecutive year playing for Hamersley, all of them played in Open Division 1 (or the historical equivalent).
Janine's pre 355 game celebration
Janine's post 355 game celebration
Even though she has three beautiful young girls Jaide, Maddison and Darsi with husband Craig, she has not missed one season with pregnancy – a massive achievement in itself! Her family are her biggest supporters with her Dad, Tom, (also a Life Member of HNC) still Team 1 Manager, her Mum, Beth, and sister, Donella, in chief babysitter roles on the sidelines most weeks and her girls shooting goals at half time on Saturdays.
You may have heard the phrase at Hamersley “triple impact competitor” which defines a player who works hard on and off the court to make themselves better, make others better and make the competition better. What you may not know, is that this definition was modelled on Janine Friday who continues to embody all those traits on a weekly basis.
Michelle Cox interviews Janine
We are also proud to have Janine as our Hamersley Netball Club Captain, and she is a perfect representative in this role. Our Club Captain is a positive role model for Hamersley players, who is approachable and knowledgeable and can provide advice and guidance as a link between the committee and the players.
Congratulations Neen – here’s to the next 355!

Monica Holton Sportsmanship Award
This will now be retitled to the ‘Sportsmanship Award’ and the winner will receive the 'Monica Holton Medal'.
Rising Star Award

Your Chance to Nominate a Player for the Sportsmanship and Courage Awards

Nomination forms are now open on our website. Any current club member can nominate a player for these awards.
Tap the buttons below to learn more about each award and view the nomination forms. Nominations close Saturday 9 September at midnight.
To all new members, please realise that these awards are not automatically given out each year. These awards are hard to earn and are only given out at the discretion of the Development Unit after nominations have been received by the membership. Last year we had recipients for both awards. Read their stories below.
Daisy Iwanek was awarded the Monica Holton Sportsmanship Award last year but unfortuantely could not be there to accept it. Aimee Armstrong, who nominated Daisy, accepted the award on her behalf. Also on stage was Legend Donna Ling (Monica Holton's daughter), and the 2016 recipient Grace Moran.
Since joining Hamersley Netball Club in 2014 Daisy has grown to be a positive role model and leader on court and always gives 110%, no matter what position she is playing. Due to injuries in her team last season, Daisy had to play most of her time on court out of position. Of the 60 quarters of netball that Daisy played, 38 of them were spent in the defensive circle. This is not an easy task for a player who has spent most of her netball life as a centre court player.
Daisy never complained about playing a different position and was eager to listen and quickly learn new tactics to benefit her team. Her tireless work ethic and drive to win the ball has on multiple occasions resulted in a turnover or intercept at crucial moments in the game.
Emily Haywood received the Courage Award at last year's Awards Dinner from Coaching Hall of Fame Legends Zenda Cocivera and Lyn Pemberton who nominated Emily. Over the past 4 years Emily had continually struggled with an ankle injury that resulted in two operations. In 2017 Em continued to battle to stay on court and eventually succumbed to the need for her second operation.
Throughout those 3 years of uncertainty and trying to play and train through the injury, Em continued to support the West Coast Warriors WANL team at both trainings and games weekly, put her hand up to coach a Junior Warriors team, coach at TACT and turned up to HNC trainings and games to support her team mates.

Photos for our Annual Awards

Can you believe the season is almost over? We still need photos from most teams of game play to show during this years High Tea Annual Awards on the 21 October. The deadline for submitting photos is 1 week after the Grand Finals.
To help you take great pictures we have a new Photography Guidelines page on our website. Here you will find everything you need to know from checking for photography consent to how to submit your photos to Dropbox.

2018 STS Association Championships

Hamersley athletes, coaches and managers had another outstanding year at the Smarter Than Smoking Association Championship over the June long weekend. Hamerlsey was represented by 79 players (which includes 4 players that withdrew due to injury), 7 coaches, 2 mentor coaches and 4 managers as part of Wanneroo District Netball Association at the championships.
Hamersley members were part of two Premierships teams and three runners up teams. Congratulations to all the athletes, coaches and managers on their participation across the three days, and for representing our club and association with passion and pride.
We must also thank our very own President, Alexis Stevens, for capturing the video footage. Good drone skills Alexis!
WDNA Open Team 1, consisting of all Hamersley players, competed in the Open Division 1 final against Fremantle at the State Netball Centre in the last game of the Association Championships. Unfortunately, Fremantle came away with the win, but we are very proud of our Hamersley representatives.

Our Strategy for the Future

By Alexis Stevens
President
In late 2017 our Committee commenced development of the club’s inaugural Strategic Plan. With the assistance of the West Australian Sports Federation ‘TopPlan’ platform, we developed a number of strategic focus areas, goals, and strategies to guide the development and progression of the club over the next four years.
The launch of our Strategic Plan (2018 - 2021) is an exciting milestone, as it clearly demonstrates our commitment to planning and strategic development.
Hamersley is more than just a netball club, we are a netball family. We have an excellent membership, with a large portion of members (including parent members) who give back to the club in a regular volunteering role. Our Strategic Plan endeavours to ensure members who volunteer do so in purposeful roles that contribute to the achievement of our strategic goals. In addition, our Strategic Plan will assist the Committee in making decisions relating to how and where we spend club money.
As part of developing our Strategic Plan, we defined our values:
"Belonging, Professionalism and Respect".
Our vision:
"To be an exceptional netball club on and off the court, with members who believe Hamersley is their club for life".
And reaffirmed the importance of our motto:
“Be the best you can be”.
You can visit our Strategic Plan (2018 - 2021) page on our website to read about our strategic focus areas and goals.

Keep up the good work – Sideline Behaviour

By Alexis Stevens
President
Last year Hamersley signed up to the Play by the Rules Let Kids be Kids campaign, in support of stopping poor sideline behaviour. As a club, we mostly have excellent sideline behaviour, however as the pointy end of the season approaches tension can rise, so it is imperative poor sideline behaviour does not creep in.
At Hamersley, we expect our sidelines to be positive and to reward great skill or effort with a “Well Done” or a “Good Job” cheer. You must leave coaching comments and player feedback to the team coach. Also, comments relating to the umpiring are not acceptable. If things on the court aren’t going as well as you’d like, I recommend a “Go Hamersley” cheer or to keep quiet.
It’s important for our sideline supporters to model excellent sideline behaviours, and for us to hold each other accountable for any behaviours that aren’t appropriate.
Let’s keep up the great work and ensure that leading into finals our club has an excellent sideline culture!

Strength & Conditioning

Term 4 is the final session of our Strength & Conditioning program for 2018. It will commence on the 8th October, after the school holiday break. This term will focus on strength endurance so you can play harder for longer!

Pink Sports Day

By Aimee Armstrong
Head of Social Events
A big thank you to everyone who participated in the 2018 Pink Sports Day supporting BCNA on the 28 July. It was great to see so many of our members adding a splash of pink for the day to raise money for a cause that has affected many people through our club and community.

I'm pleased to say we raised a total of $475 on the day - a wonderful effort by all! A big thank you to all the team managers for collecting donations and orders for ribbons in the lead up to Pink Day and to all of the players and parents for getting involved.

Thanks to all the teams who sent through photos of their Pink Sports Day. They are now up in the Gallery.

Keep your Eye on the Ball!

You should always keep your wits about you during a team training session. Especially when you’re the videographer! Thanks to Sarah ‘Fogs’ Fogliani, coach of Open Team 5, for sharing this little ‘mishap’ at training during a strength drill. As the saying goes, “Keep your eye on the ball”.

New Restructured Navigation

We have just done an early spring clean to our website's navigation. We have simplified the top navigation and added a new section called "Our Programs". In here you'll find.... our programs! We have also added "plus" buttons to the mobile view which when pressed reveal what's in each section.

Injury Corner

Thankfully, we have welcomed back some players from injury after the school holiday break. Unfortunately, Hamersley still have six athletes with long term injuries. We wish them well in their recovery.

New Arrival

Congratulations to Trent & Issy Quesnel on the birth of their beautiful son, Archie John Quesnel. Archie was born on the 8 July 2018 at 7:53pm weighing 8lb (3.6kg). Welcome to the Hamersley Netball Club Family little one!
