Issue 4
November 2019
In this fourth and final issue for 2019 we have a season Wrap-Up, a Grand Finals Report, videos of Maddie Ciullo's 200 games milestone celebrations, a review of our 2019 Annual Awards, a list of Umpiring Achievements, a farewell send off for Lisa Townsend, a report on Club Legend Kelly Holton's Breast Cancer Care WA fundraiser, a Special Thank You, and a reminder about Hamersley's 2020 Registrations.

That's A Wrap!!

2019 was a fantastic year for the club with many on court and off court achievements. This year Hamersley had a total of 26 teams and after the grading rounds we had 13 teams in a Division 1 competition and a whopping 93 members graded into a higher age group. 15 teams made it into the first round of Semi-Finals with 10 progressing to the Grand Final where 6 teams came away with a Premiership flag.
Our club commenced the season with 10 players per team (there were a couple of exceptions) and some would say 10 is too many. This year, Hamersley experienced that 10 was at times, not enough. We had players across all age groups playing up to help teams who were struck with injuries, illnesses or due to holidays and other sporting achievements. It was fair to say that the mid-season break was a much needed one. It shows our amazing club culture when members of our committee, our coaches and our players come together to help teams in need. To all those players who eagerly put their hands up to play or sit on the bench just in case you were needed, thank you!
We ended the season on a high as all members of the club came together for our Annual Awards to celebrate an amazing year. Congratulations to everyone and thank you for another great year.

2019 Grand Finals Report

In 2019 we had 26 teams with 15 making it through to the first round of Semi-Finals and 10 competing in the Grand Finals which were played on Saturday 21 September. To those teams who missed out on finals this year, well done on a great season.
This year we continued our Hamersley spirit with many supporters who came down to encourage our teams. It was amazing to hear the roar and see our red and blue army cheering on the teams.
On the 2019 Grand Final day we experienced many highs and lows with both wins and losses with a range of scores. The day started with a bang at 9am, we had 3 teams compete with 2 coming out with the win. One of our first Premierships of the 2019 season went to Team 25, who defeated Genesis by an incredible 72 goals in the 12U, Division 6 Grand Final. Final score 72-4. Congratulations to Head Coach Janine and the team on an outstanding season.
Team 25 winners of the 12U Division 6 Grand Final
Our youngest team in the club, Team 26 played in the 12U Division 7 Grand Final. In their Semi-Final, Team 26 lost to West Coasters by 21 goals and in just a short two-week turnaround, the “underdogs” came out firing securing the Premiership defeating West Coasters 29-23. That is a massive 27 goal turnaround! Congratulations and amazing efforts to our youngsters and their Head Coach Vickie.

Thank you and congratulations to all our coaches, assistant and apprentice coaches on all your hard work week after week. Thank you to our managers, supports and committee members who went above and beyond during our 2019 finals series, whether it was cheering, filling up water bottles or scoring/timing, your efforts were greatly appreciated.

Maddie's 200 pre-game celebration
By Janine Friday
Club Captain
Congratulations to Maddie Ciullo for playing her 200th game for Hamersley on 31 August 2019. Maddie started with the club in 2004 when she was just 12 years old and has won 4 Premierships. She has only missed two seasons - 2013 when she was working away in Narrogin and 2018 when she had her beautiful daughter Ellia.
Maddie is an extremely valued Hamersley member, not only as a player, but has coached and is a current committee member. Maddie is always first to put her hand up to help out, she is passionate in all that she does and wears her blue and red heart on her sleeve.
Maddie's 200 post-game celebration
If you’ve ever had the chance to play, coach, be coached or just be in the presence of Maddie, you know what a hard-working, supportive and all round champion she is. Maddie, your love for this sport and club is remarkable and we can’t wait to see where the next 200 games takes you! Congratulations on this wonderful milestone.

Our fantastic MC for the day was the one and only Sarah (aka “Fogs”). Fogs did a brilliant job as always, and if she wasn’t telling jokes she was singing “to the left, to the left.”

Umpiring Achievements

A huge thank you to all our umpire representatives for the club in 2019. We all know that without our umpires we wouldn’t have a game and those who have umpired before, know it can be far from an easy job at times. To all our Hamersley umpires, we thank you for representing the club and congratulate all of those who achieved an umpire accreditation this year.

Lisa Townsend's Farewell Send Off

This season we saw one of our Hamersley greats, Lisa Townsend, play her final game of the season. What a way to finish off your playing career than on court in the Division 1 Grand Final.
Lisa joined Hamersley in 1996, playing a total 189 games for the club. Since 2011, Lisa has competed in 6 Division 1 Grand Finals, winning 3 Premierships for the club. In 2013, Lisa was a member of the Vickie Carstairs All Star Team and in 2019 awarded Hamersley Players Player Award. Lisa was also Captain for the Open Division 1 team in both 2018 and 2019. Congratulations on a sensational on court career with Hamersley.
You are a beautiful person both on and off the court and are loved by all who were lucky enough to play with you. Although we say goodbye to Lisa on the court, as said in her own words at our Annual Awards Event, we will see Lisa moving onto new roles such as a career in coaching very soon. Congratulations Lisa!

Kelly Holton Jumping For A Great Cause

On Saturday 2 November, Cub Legend Kelly Holton jumped out of a plane to raise funds for Breast Cancer Care WA. Kelly decided to skydive to make a difference for West Australians facing a diagnosis of breast cancer.
“After going through it myself as well as watching my Mum and my Nana go through it as well, I’m inspired by the work that Breast Cancer Care WA do, so I wanted to raise money for them.”
The Holton family are well known in the Hamersley community. Kelly’s mum Monica became a Hamersley Life Member in 2001 and was posthumously inducted into the Hamersley Coaching Hall of Fame in 2016. Monica was also recognized by Wanneroo District Netball Association when she was awarded Life Membership in 2008 and by Netball WA when she posthumously awarded Volunteer of the Year in 2011. Both Kelly and sister Donna have followed this path as they are both Hamersley Legends.
Kelly raised a massive $1835 for Breast Cancer WA and had the following to say about her experience jumping out of a plane;
“It’s always easy to do something when it’s for a cause that means a lot to you. Breast Cancer WA not only helped my mum Monica but also myself who had a double mastectomy almost 2 years ago… I was nervous in the car on my way to Rockingham where I was doing the jump. But once I was there, there was no turning back… No matter how scary things seem, you always have to look forward. You are never going to beat anything that life throws at you by looking backwards.”
Well done Kelly, you truly are a legend. A brilliant achievement for such a worthy cause. We are all extremely proud of you!!

A Special Thank You

To all our coaches, umpires, committee members, managers, sponsors, athletes, parents and supports thank you for a fantastic 2019 season. We wouldn’t be the club we are without all your hard work, love and support. We hope to see you all back next year.
